The P-59 was the Army Air Corps first jet plane.  Using Whittle Turbojet engines from Great Britain, the Bell Aircraft Corporation designed a body.  The Airacomet was first flown October 1, 1942. Sixty-three were made and used for training.  The top speed of 400 mph did not make it feasible to compete with prop-driven aircraft.
