The B-47 Statojet prototype was an amazing looking piece of machinery in 1947.  The sweptback wings were decidedly futuristic.  The first production B-47s flew in 1950.  With jet engine power, designers were free to change things in radical new ways.  The two outer engines were used to help boost for take off.
