The carrier based Curtiss Helldiver was a difficult plane to fly and repair, and was rather unpopular with pilots. In fact they nicknamed it “the beast.” Designed to be a dive-bomber it carried a heavier payload than the Douglas Dauntless and remained in service until 1949.

Curtiss SB2C-1 U. S. Navy Dive Bomber. Series C, number seventeen. Our Navy originated dive-bombing, and is exacting in demanding the world’s best. The Curtiss SB2C-1 is the answer. Powered with a Wright Cyclone double-row 1700 h.p. engine, it flies faster and carries a larger bomb load a greater distance than any other dive-bomber. Wing slots and slow landing speed make it excellent for carrier operation. Co-operation of Flying and Popular Aviation. This is one of a series of fifty pictures of Modern Airplanes packed with WINGS Cigarettes.
