Grumman began planning for the Hellcat before Pearl Harbor. Once in combat, the Hellcat immediately proved itself superior to the A6M Zero. The F6F was fast, durable and maneuverable, able to out climb the Zero, resulting in the phenomenal kill ratio of 19:1. Many of the aces of World War II flew Hellcats. They were such an important fighter that they eventually rolled off the assembly line one each minute.
