The AD was introduced as a Navy light bomber right at the end of World War II (1946) and was used during Korea and Vietnam.  The Air Force designated them A-1.  One of the strongest planes ever built, the Skyraider could take a horrible amount of damage and still fly back to base.  For a light bomber, it could also carry an incredible amount of ordnance, up to 8,000 pounds.  That is more than the heavy bomber B-17 Flying Fortress.  The Skyraider was a popular ground support aircraft.  Nicknamed “Dump Truck” because of its ability to unload so much payload on a target.
