The B-18 heavy bomber is based on the Douglas DC-2. A redsign gave the Bolo the distinctive shark-looking nose. A good bomber in speed, range and payload in 1935, the B-18 was completely obsolete by the end of 1941. The Bolo was the most numerous bomber at the United States entry to World War II. However, only a few were equipped with magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) equipment. The B-18s sunk two German U-boats. They were replaced in 1942 by the B-24 Liberators.
