This bi-plane was the first United States Army aircraft designed as a cargo and transport plane. Six passengers could be seated in the hold, and both pilot and co-pilot sat in an open cockpit in front of the wings. The loading door was in the floor of the plane, which seems a waste of space for carrying cargo. The C-1 was also the first plane to deliver a load of fuel while in flight. On December 17, 1928 the C-1 fueled a Fokker C-2, only to be phased out the next year.
