The Wright Brothers plane. Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright were inventors since their youth. They figured out a faster snow sled, owned a bicycle shop, and were always tinkering with mechanical things. The first heavier than air craft to fly, the Wright Flyer left the ground of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. Orville flew for 12 seconds. Three more flights and they were going 59 seconds. Almost a whole minute! The plane is now in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
