This Japanese Army plane flew as a prototype in 1936 and was in production from 1937 to 1942. With fixed landing gear and great manoeuverability, 3,384 were built. By 1942 however, the Nakajima Ki-27 were becoming outdated, and were relegated to secondary use. When the Allies first saw them in China and Burma they called them “Abdul” but soon they were given the name “Nate.” The Japanese Army nomenclature was Army Type 97.
