History of Personal Cabin Pressure Monitor
Could this device save your life?

The concept for the Personal Cabin Pressure Altitude Monitor and Warning
System was conceived and patented by NASA. The initial motivation was for
affording Space Shuttle and Space Station crew members added independent
protection from an incipient depressurization event. The need to introduce the
device to the private sector was galvanized by the
Payne Stewart aircraft accident
in October 1999.
Introduction of the first prototypes to the public took place at EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh 2000 in July during two technical forum presentations. Some
modifications were made to the device in response to feedback from the forums.
An industry briefing was held in October 2000 and license applications were
accepted until January 2001. Kelly Manufacturing Company was awarded a patent
license to produce the Personal Cabin Pressure Altitude Monitor and Warning
System in January 2002. Modifications were made to the device to incorporate new
technology and to add functions. The Personal Cabin Pressure Altitude Monitor and
Warning System (PCM 1000) was introduced for public sale at EAA AirVenture
Oshkosh 2002.
